The book series has received significant recognition, spending 175 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. It also reached No. 1 on the Young Adult Hardcover list with Children of Blood and Bone and Children of Virtue and Vengeance, as well as on the Children's & Young Adult Series list with Children of Anguish and Anarchy for four, five, and one week(s), respectively.
The adaptation, announced last year, boasts a powerful cast. Thuso Mbedu, known for The Woman King, will star as Zélie, alongside Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari and Damson Idris as Prince Inan.
Additional notable actors include EGOT winners Viola Davis as Mama Agba and Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea. Idris Elba will portray Lekan, while Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to play King Saran, with Regina King in talks for the role of Queen Nehanda. Lashana Lynch will appear as Jumoke, Zélie and Tzain’s mother.
The ensemble also features surprising additions, including Tosin Cole as Tzain, alongside Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), Ayra Starr, Pamilerin Ayodeji, Shamz Garuba, Kola Bodunde, Temi Fagbenle, and Saniyya Sidney.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), the film is poised to be a stunning adaptation, bringing the rich, magical world of Orïsha to life.
Production is led by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Entertainment, alongside Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment—the team behind Twilight—and Matt Jackson of Jackson Pictures. Adeyemi, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Jeff Waxman, and Jennifer Madeloff serve as executive producers, with Adeyemi and Prince-Bythewood co-writing the script.
With such an outstanding cast and crew, the adaption is undoubtedly off to an exciting start.
