1. Afritondo Short Story Prize 2025
Deadline: 23 December 2024
Entry Fee: Free
Eligibility: Open to citizens/nationals of African countries, individuals of black ethnicity, or those with a parent from an African country.
Theme: "Masks" – exploring spiritual, psychological, social, and cultural coverings.
Prizes: Winner: $1,000; Four shortlisted writers: $100 each.
Submission: Free entry; 3,000–5,000 words in English, anonymized format, and submitted via email to submissions@afritondo.com. See detailed formatting and guidelines.
Judges: Rémy Ngamije, Ama Asantewa Diaka, Umar Turaki.
2. Lyric Magazine College Poetry Contest 2024
Deadline: December 31, 2024
Entry Fee: Free
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduates enrolled in American or Canadian colleges/universities.
Prizes: First: $500; Second: $200; Third: $100; Honorable Mention: Year’s subscription.
Submission: Up to 3 original, unpublished poems (39 lines or less) in English, using traditional forms. Include a cover letter with your details. Submit by mail to Tanya Cimonetti (1393 Spear Street, South Burlington, VT 05403) or email to tanyacim2@aol.com.
Results: Winners announced in The Lyric’s Winter issue.
3. The Four Quartets Prize 2024
Deadline: December 31, 2024
Entry Fee: Free
Eligibility: Open to authors, publishers, and agents submitting a unified sequence of poems published in the U.S. in 2024. Self-published works and co-authored submissions are ineligible.
Prizes: Winner: $20,000; Finalists: $1,000 each.
Submission: At least 14 pages of poetry unified by subject, form, or style, published in 2024 in a journal, chapbook, or book. Include an entry form, a paragraph on the work’s aims, and four copies of supporting materials. Send via USPS to the Poetry Society of America, 119 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
4. Porter House Review 2024–2025 Editor’s Prize
Deadline: December 31, 2024
Entry Fee: Free
Eligibility: Open to all except Texas State University students, alumni, and faculty. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and anonymous.
Categories & Guidelines:
Poetry: Up to 5 poems.
Nonfiction: Max 6,000 words (essays, memoir, literary reportage).
Fiction: Max 8,000 words (short stories, flash, hybrid forms).
Prizes: $750 and publication for winners in each category. All submissions considered for publication.
Fees: $10 (waived Dec 22–28, 2024).
Submission: Via Submittable portal only. Simultaneous submissions allowed but must be withdrawn if accepted elsewhere.
Judges: Rebecca Makkai, Romeo Oriogun, Maurice Chammah. Results announced April 2025.
5. Lilith Magazine Annual Fiction Competition 2024
Deadline: December 31, 2024
Entry Fee: Free
Eligibility: Open to all. Stories must be original, unpublished, under 3,000 words, and exhibit feminist and Jewish nuances. Submissions from writers of color and emerging writers are encouraged.
Prizes: Winner: $300 and publication.
Submission Guidelines: Email your story to info@lilith.org with the subject line “Fiction Contest” and your surname. Include full contact information on the manuscript.
Lilith seeks short stories with heart, soul, and chutzpah.
6. 2025 Elizabeth Alexander Creative Writing Award
Deadline: December 31, 2024
Entry Fee: Free.
Eligibility: Open to all genres—poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and play scripts. Submissions must be original, unpublished, and engage with feminism, race, or transnationalism. Works in translation or languages other than English are encouraged. Simultaneous submissions are not accepted.
Prizes: $500 and publication.
Submission Guidelines: Submit through the Scholar One portal, marking the submission as “Elizabeth Alexander Award Submission.” Poems (3-5) must be in one document; prose (up to 7,500 words) and play scripts (up to 5,000 words) must follow formatting guidelines.
The award honors creative work reflecting artistic and cultural advocacy.
