Writing Contests
1. The One Teen Story Contest 2025
The One Teen Story Contest 2025 is open for submissions until December 2, 2024, with no entry fee required. The contest invites original, unpublished short fiction from writers aged 13-19.
Submissions must feature teen characters and explore the teen experience in any genre, including literary, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, or horror.
Guidelines
- Word count: 2,000-4,500 words.
- Entries must be original, unpublished works (including self-published or school publications) and cannot be AI-assisted.
- Only one submission per writer is allowed.
- Stories must be submitted via Submittable, with proof of age and parental consent required for entrants under 18.
Prizes
Winners: $500 upon publication, editorial mentorship, and story publication on the One Teen Story website.
Honorable Mentions: Recognized in three age groups (13-15, 16-17, 18-19) and announced on the website, email, and social media.

2. The J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards 2025
The J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards 2025 are open for submissions until December 5, 2024, with no entry fee required. These awards recognize excellence in nonfiction that reflects the literary grace and rigorous research of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist J. Anthony Lukas.
About the Work-in-Progress Awards:
Two awards of $25,000 each will support the completion of significant nonfiction works on topics of American political or social concern.
These awards are intended to help bridge the gap between the financial resources available to authors and the time needed to complete their projects.
Eligibility
- Applicants must have a contract with a U.S.-based publisher.
- Judges evaluate based on the book’s merit, financial need, and its potential impact. Applicants must disclose their advance and any other financial support.

- Original book proposal.
- 50-75 pages from the work-in-progress.
- Publisher contract photocopy.
- Statement on how the award will aid the book’s progress.

3. The 5th Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition 2025
The 5th Jemila Abubakar Memorial Essay Competition is open for submissions from November 6 to December 6, 2024, and is free to enter. The competition, organized by the Asido Foundation, focuses on mental health issues and is open to undergraduate students of Nigerian tertiary institutions.
About the Competition
The essay competition honors the late Miss Jemila Abubakar, the foundation's pioneer program manager, and aims to raise mental health awareness among Nigerian youths. Winners receive cash prizes and join a year-long mental health advocacy mentorship program.

"Bridging the Gap: Innovative Solutions for Mental Health Support in African Tertiary Institutions"

4. The Women's Poetry Competition 2024
The Women's Poetry Competition 2024 is open for submissions until December 9, 2024. Writers can submit unpublished poems of any length, on any subject. An entry fee of £10 allows up to three poems per submission.

Eligibility
- Open to women of any nationality and country, who self-identify as women.
- Poems must be unpublished and original (not translations).

Submission Guidelines
- Single-spaced poems on A4 pages; title on the same page as the poem.
- Entries judged anonymously (do not include your name on the poem pages).
- Poems should be in English or an English dialect.

5. The Sine Qua Non Creative Prose and Poetry Competitions 2024
The Sine Qua Non Creative Prose and Poetry Competitions 2024 are now open for submissions, offering a total of $2,000 in cash prizes across two categories: creative prose and poetry. Submissions are free of charge, but the window may close early if submission limits are reached.
Submissions are open from October 15 to December 15, 2024. Submit early to avoid missing the cap!

6. The Eggtooth Editions Chapbook Contest 2024
The Eggtooth Editions Chapbook Contest 2024 is open for submissions from September 15 to December 15, 2024, offering a $250 prize, publication of the winning manuscript, and 20 author copies of the chapbook. No submission fee is required for the 2024 contest, though entries are capped at 100 submissions, so submit early!

Eligibility
- Open to writers in English who have not published a full-length book (defined as a work over 50 pages, including self-published works).
- Collaborative works are allowed, but co-authors share the prize and author copies.
- Manuscripts must be unpublished as a whole, but up to 50% of individual pieces may have been published in magazines, journals, or anthologies.
- Translations are not eligible.

7. The Frontier Poetry Portrait Prize 2024
The Frontier Poetry Portrait Prize 2024 is open for submissions from October 15 to December 15, 2024. The first-place winner will receive $3,500, with second and third-place prizes of $300 and $200, respectively. There is a $20 entry fee for general submissions, but free submissions are available for marginalized groups (until the first 50 submissions are reached). Winners will be announced in spring 2025.
Eligibility
- Open to new and emerging poets (no more than one full-length published or forthcoming work).
- Open internationally, with submissions in English (some code-switching allowed).
- Work must be unpublished and original.
Submission Guidelines
- Submit up to three poems (maximum five pages) in a single document.
- All styles of poetry are welcome.

8. The 2025 St. Martin’s Minotaur/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Competition
The 2025 St. Martin’s Minotaur/Mystery Writers of America First Crime Novel Competition is open to writers worldwide who have never published a novel. The competition offers a $10,000 cash prize and the chance for publication. There is no entry fee. The submission deadline is December 15, 2024, and entries must be submitted electronically via the official online entry form.
Submissions must be original, unpublished crime novels of at least 60,000 words and must follow specific guidelines, including focusing on a murder or serious crime. Only one manuscript per writer is allowed. Guidelines for RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers 2025
This award supports emerging Canadian writers of poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction. It honors Bronwen Wallace, who championed opportunities for new writers. Candidates must have published in a literary magazine or anthology but remain unpublished in book form and without a book contract. Self-published books or chapbooks are allowed.

Organized by The London Society, this annual competition invites writers to celebrate London in prose or poetry, inspired by the theme "Dreams for London".
