The Jolley Prize is worth a total of $12,500 and is for an original work of short fiction of between 2,000 and 5,000 words, written in English. This is the fifteenth time the Jolley Prize has run and it is one of the world’s leading prizes for short fiction.

Jolley Prize - Terms and Conditions

Who can enter?

  • Entries are welcome from living writers writing in English anywhere in the world.
  • There is no age limit.
  • ABR staff and board members are not eligible to enter.
  • ABR contributors, editorial interns, and volunteers may enter.
How to enter
  • Entries must be submitted online via the ABR website entry page.
  • Multiple entries are permitted but each must be entered as a separate transaction.
  • The author’s name must not appear in the story or in the name of the digital file because judging is conducted blind.
  • Entrants will receive automatic confirmation of receipt to the email address used when entering.
  • Formatting your entry
  • Entries must be submitted as Word documents (.doc or .docx).
  • The text should be presented in 12 pt font size.
  • The pages should be numbered.
  • The file name must only include the title of the story. Entrants must not include their own name in the title of the story or the file name.
  • Entries must be a single, original story of 2,000 to 5,000 words
  • Entries must be written in English.
  • Exclusivity
  • Entries may be offered elsewhere during the judging of the Jolley Prize.
  • If an entrant is longlisted and has offered their story elsewhere, the entrant will have 24 hours to decide if they would like to withdraw their story on offer elsewhere or from the Jolley Prize.
  • Exclusivity is essential for longlisted stories to remain in contention for shortlisting.
  • The official longlist will be announced when the shortlisted stories are announced. It is our expectation that the authors of non-shortlisted stories will be notified in July 2024.
  • What does it cost to enter a story?
  • Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of AU$30, or AU$20 for current ABR. To qualify for the lower entry fee, entrants must hold a current print or digital subscription to ABR.
  • If you don't have an ABR digital subscription, you can purchase a one-year digital subscription and enter a single story for a total of AU$100. You can then enter additional stories at the discounted rate of $20 each.
  • If you don't have an ABR print+digital subscription, you can purchase a one-year subscription and enter a single story for the following rates: $120 (Australia), $200 (New Zealand/Asia), or $220 (ROW)
  • If you choose not to subscribe to ABR (print and/or online) when you enter the Prize and you are not already an ABR subscriber, you will receive digital access to ABR free of charge for four months.
Terms and conditions
  • Entries must be original works of fiction written by an individual living author.
  • Entries must not infringe upon anyone’s copyright.
  • Entries that are deemed to be works of plagiarism will be disqualified.
  • Previously published, prize-winning, or broadcast stories will not be accepted. (Previous online appearances constitute prior publication.) Entries will be deemed ineligible if they are under contract to another publisher or broadcaster and remain so after a longlisted entrant is contacted regarding eligibility.
  • Stories entered but not publicly shortlisted in past Jolley Prizes may be re-entered.
  • Entries will be removed from longlists or shortlists if we discover they have been published elsewhere.
  • Entries must contain nothing obscene, libellous, unlawful, defamatory, or anything ABR may deem to be inappropriate.
  • Translations are not eligible.
  • If entrants subsequently withdraw their entries, the entry fee will not be refunded.
  • The shortlisted entrants will be encouraged to take part in media interviews to help promote the stories and the magazine.
  • The prize money, to be paid following the announcement of the winner and runners-up, also covers digital and print publication in ABR.
  • Copyright in the story (or stories) remains with the entrant.
  • Publication
  • Our expectation is that the shortlisted stories will require little editing apart from the application of house style.
  • ABR will edit the shortlisted stories and show the authors changes for their approval. The authors will be involved throughout and will be shown successive proofs.
  • The three shortlisted stories will be published in the August or September 2024 issue (print and online).
  • Authorship of the shortlisted stories will be fully acknowledged in the ABR print and online issues and in all related material.
  • Copyright in the shortlisted stories resides with the authors. The shortlisted entrants grant Australian Book Review an exclusive licence to publish their winning stories in the relevant ABR issue (print and online edition) for three months from the date of first publication in the issue, and thereafter a non-exclusive licence indefinitely to publish in the relevant online issue.
  • If syndication or anthologisation of the winning stories is mooted, ABR will consult the winning authors for approval. The authors will receive 50% of any syndication fees and 100% of any anthology fees.
The Judging Process
  • Judging is completely anonymous.
  • The entrant’s name must not appear in the Word file or in the file name.
  • Entries must not include personal dedications, as these might inadvertently reveal the entrant's identity. Dedications can be added following completion of the judging.
  • Those entrants who are longlisted must not publicise their inclusion on the longlist or contact the judges while the judging process continues.
  • The judges are Patrick Flanery, Melinda Harvey and Susan Midalia.
  • ABR will publish the shortlisted stories in the August or September 2024 issue and will announce the overall winner at a special ceremony later in the month of publication. All entrants will be invited.
  • The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into about the judgements or the judging process.
  • We are unable to provide feedback about individual entries.
  • ABR reserves the right not to award a prize
