"a poignant exploration of societal injustices and the cyclical nature of poverty and violence"—Pawners Paper
THE SOUL OF US
it is the agbero,
shorts torn at the knees.
the pursuers pursue.
among them is the okadaman
children’s school fees unpaid
why is he angry?
why is he chasing?
2-by-2 meets the head
body hugs the earth, dead
and their anger is pacified
now a mother is crying
now a father is pacing
who dealt the blow?
who killed the boy?
the big-bellied, soft-palmed
big daddy, sends a bag of rice
and fresh-scenting mint notes
the parents dance, and sing songs
but mints served from those soft palms too
has turned other sons into thugs.
They know. We know.
We hail, and adulate
and mint notes rain.
We're puppets on a string
helplessly ourselves, it is the soul of us.
