SUSPECT invites submissions exploring the theme of succession in the Nusantara region* for our Malay Translation Portfolio, which is scheduled for pub
Submission Deadline: September 1, 2023
Payment: USD100.00
What does inheritance mean in a region with a history as contested as Southeast Asia’s? Amidst the rise and demise of empire, revolutionary ideologies and the rhetoric of Merdeka, and a current political atmosphere in which anything can happen, the idea of succession in Nusantara, the Old Javanese name for Maritime Southeast Asia, is richly resonant. Whose histories and cultures are we inheriting, and who will inherit ours? What may be lost in transmission and perhaps also in translation? We are interested in how past and living Malay-language writers of the region have addressed these questions.
