Apply For The Alpine Fellowship Poetry Prize 2023
Application for the Alpine fellowship poetry prize 2023 is currently open for writers all over the world. This year's Alpine poetry prize is awarded for the best poetry on the theme of the Alpine Fellowship 2023 - Flourishing.
More Details On The Theme
Flourishing
‘It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.’ —Krishnamurti
The Greeks understood that a good life was not necessarily a long life or one free from pain. A human life of flourishing went beyond good physical health to include the fulfillment of dreams and ambitions, the perfection of skills, and the experience of mental and moral evolution. Built into the notion of flourishing seems to be a sense of successful journey.
Perhaps in the west at least there is a legacy of our Judeo Christian heritage, of original sin, and a deep cultural sense that we are flawed, perhaps sick, and in need of healing or saving, of quest, of getting somewhere, spiritually or financially. Whilst the pilgrim or the mendicant capture our longing for abandoning the worlds and flourishing spiritually, we also share a world that views flourishing as soluble, as numerous but finite financial and medical problems to be solved - something that is ultimately measurable.
But perhaps we are where we were always supposed to be, as individuals, as a species. Perhaps there is nothing to fix, or anywhere to go; to flourish is to love and to recognise the beauty of what is. To love the world as it is does not mean to reconcile ourselves to pain and misery; the world changes and we can be agents of that change. Maybe flourishing implies letting go of our constant efforts to frame a meaningful life separate from our fear of death and our will to avoid all pain?
We are interested in some of the following questions:
- Is our striving for a particular conception of health or flourishing at the heart of our sickness?
- And what if sickness or disease is a tremendous yet neglected and misunderstood portal to deeper health?
- What would a conception of flourishing look like that integrated suffering right at the very heart of its approach to life?
- Can a techno-scientific worldview aiming at a life free from suffering and filled with convenience really integrate such a conception?
- What does it mean to be healthy, and what would constitute a healthy society?
- What role does our environment play in this? Can we conceive of our health as separate from our environment?
These questions do not need to be answered directly in your submission, but may help to inspire ideas or provoke new approaches.
