About the RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers 2023
Established in memory of writer Bronwen Wallace, this award has a proven track record of helping talented developing authors get their first book deal. Two $10,000 prizes will be given for outstanding works of unpublished poetry and short fiction.
The RBC Bronwen Wallace Award is sponsored by RBC Emerging Artists. The initiative supports organizations that provide the best opportunity for artists to advance in their projected career paths. Providing key funding across artistic genres, RBC contributes to the positive, sustained impact of the arts in building strong, diverse, and vibrant communities. Since 2015, more than 28,000 artists have been supported through these programs.

Established in memory of writer Bronwen Wallace, this award is for developing writers of poetry. Bronwen Wallace felt that writers should have more opportunities for greater recognition early in their careers, and so this annual award is given to a writer who has published poetry or prose in a literary magazine or anthology, but has not yet been published in book form and is without a book contract.
By submitting to this award, candidates grant Writers’ Trust of Canada permission to publish their work in print and digital formats should they be shortlisted. All rights reserved by the author.
2023 submissions opened on December 4, 2022 and will close on January 16, 2023 at 11:59pm PT.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the 2023 prize, a writer must be:
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Published in an independently edited literary magazine or anthology
- Unpublished in book form and without a book contract (a self-published book or chapbook is not disqualifying)
To submit an entry:
- Eligible candidates should send up to 10 pages of previously unpublished poetry.
- Candidates grant Writers’ Trust of Canada permission to publish their work in print and digital formats should they be shortlisted (all rights reserved by the author).

- Formatting
- Give your submission one overall title. Include the title at the top of your manuscript and in the file name of your PDF, and ensure both match the name given for your submission. You do not need a title page.
- Your manuscript must not include your name or any identifying information.
- Include consecutively numbered page numbers.
- Do not use large images within your manuscript.
- Use any font you wish in 11 pt size.
