About Sylvia Magazine
Sylvia Magazine was founded by Millie Kidson, a writer from Gloucestershire. Our mission is to create a literary space that pays writers for their work and revels in the beauty of nature.
Submission Guidelines
We are looking for nature-inspired pieces for summer, autumn and winter. We are leaning into our sylvan vibes this year; send us your forest poems, tales of fairies, and moments in nature.
We are currently open for submissions from April 24th to May 15th. Members are invited to submit from April 22nd.
Poetry
Up to 5 poems of up to 40 lines each
Prose
Up to 2 prose pieces of up to 1500 words each – stories, creative non-fiction, or essays
You are welcome to submit the full allocation of 7 pieces. Please send all of them in one email.
Submission process
Please include your submissions in the body of the email and send them to submissions@sylviamagazine.com. Attachments will not be read. Please indicate the line count for poems and the word count for prose pieces within your email. Please include a short third-person bio that we can use if your piece is published. Content warnings are encouraged if you feel that this is relevant to your piece.
We strongly encourage you to read around the site and see if your work might be a good fit. There are so many fantastic literary magazines, so if your work is not for us you are likely to find a home for it elsewhere!
Simultaneous submissions?
Simultaneous submissions are welcomed but do let us know if your piece is accepted elsewhere.
We do not accept work that has been published elsewhere, including on personal blogs.
Response time
All submissions will receive a reply within 6 months. We appreciate that this is a long time! If you have not received a reply within the time, please do drop us an email.
Unfortunately, due to the volume of submissions, we are usually unable to provide detailed feedback on every piece.
Please let us know if you are open to feedback – we’re aware that unsolicited feedback is not always welcome.
A note on submissions
We particularly welcome and encourage submissions from voices that are typically underrepresented in the writing world, including LGBTQIA+, people of colour, and disabled writers.
Payment
We pay £1.75 per line for poetry (not including titles or line breaks) and £0.25 per word for prose.
Payments will be made via PayPal or bank transfer to a UK bank account only. If you are not able to provide these then unfortunately we cannot accept your submission at the moment.
The small print
We are purchasing first rights to your piece to publish it once on the Sylvia site and to feature it in promotion on our social media channels. You retain all rights to your work.
