Hisaye Yamamoto is one of the most recognized Japanese-American writer during and post world war 2. Her ability to write stories that underlies the trivial issues of ethnic oppression, degradation in the interaction between Japanese parents and their new generation children; and patriarchy during this moment in history has received several acclaim from critic, such that she was conferred with national honorary award.
The only book by Hisaye Yamamoto is a collection of short stories titled "Seventeen Syllables and Other Stories".
During her lifetime as a mother, Hisaye Yamamoto had four children with her husband, Anthony DeSoto. The names of Hisaye Yamamoto children are Paul of Simi Valley, Yuki of Los Angeles, Rocky of Sylmar and Gilbert of Arcadia. Also, it was also reported that she had an adopted son before moving to New York in the early 1950s
Hisaye Yamamoto was also survived by seven grandchildren and two brothers.
As reported by Los Angeles Times, Hisaye Yamamoto often described herself as a housewife, not a writer. Not surprisingly, her output was greatly diminished during the years consumed by childrearing, but picked up again after her children were grown.
“I write when something sticks in my craw,” she told A. Magazine in 1994. “Writing is a compulsion — or an itch.”
