British Book Awards 2022
The annual celebration of the best books, bookshops and returns with an in-person and online event on 23rd May 2022.
The British Book Awards, aka The Nibbies, represent the absolute best of the book trade, showcasing the books, bookshops, agents and publishers who make this industry shine.
First launched in 1990 and now run by The Bookseller, the British Book Awards' two halves - Books of the Year and Book Trade Awards - celebrate the books which defied expectations and the industry who brought them to readers.
The Books of the Year are unique in recognising that a book’s success is not down to just one factor. It is the author’s creative genius, the agent and publisher’s skill and support and the retailers who champion it, just to name a few. The shortlisted titles are unapologetically about success, but success is not always defined by who is at the top of the bestseller lists.
Our Book Trade Awards celebrate everyone from independent bookshops in rural Scotland to the industry's largest players, from agents championing debut authors to marketers and publicists finding the best route to readers. Everyone plays a vital role in publishing's ecosystem, and we are here to celebrate every bit of it.
2022 sees some exciting changes to the awards categories. The Books of the Year strand will now include the Discover Book of the Year, aimed at underrepresented writers across genres, and a split of the Children’s awards into Non-fiction and Illustrated, in addition to the Fiction award. There will also be two Audiobook awards this year, representing the strong growth in that market: these will be for Fiction and Non-fiction.
On the Trade side, 2022 sees the return of the Individual Bookseller of the Year award, recognising the vital role booksellers continue to play in the sector. These build on the new awards launched last year, which included Designer of the Year—for the best-in-class book designer—and Pageturner of the Year—aimed at popular fiction titles across all formats.

Chair of the judges and editor of The Bookseller Philip Jones said:
“The return to an in-person event in 2022 will mark the culmination of an incredible and challenging two years for the trade as well as The British Book Awards. We will once again shout and amplify great publishing...and also acknowledge the magnificent books that have provided information, distraction and succour for the nation’s readers during these turbulent times. We also want to use the opportunity of a physical ceremony to recognise how publishing has changed and been changed during these past two years. We may be back, but we will not be the same, with the intention to deliver a different kind of show for both physical attendees and those watching online. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing those entries come in, from the very many small presses that are spread across the United Kingdom and Ireland, to the majors and all their works.”
