Literary sources examples


History has always be regarded as an inevitable and indispensable part of our existence and its relevance to the modern society can not be over-emphasized. 

Thus, in discovering or studying history, two sources are used. They are:
Literary Sources and Archaeological Sources.

Going by the focus of this short descriptive article, literary sources of history are written material sources that provide information about the culture, beliefs, and traditions of our ancestors and the past events.


Literary sources are of three types. They are Religion Literature, Secular or non-literature sources and Foreign Account.



The literary sources examples are:

1. Journals: A Journal is a diary where daily events are being recorded or published especially when dealing with a particular subject, industry or field. Examples of journal are academic journal, trade journal, popular magazines and newspapers. It contains a record of information or description or thoughts written each day or frequently over a long period of time.

Hence, they serve as a reputable source for historical researched to look into, in order to leach int the experiences and thoughts of early researchers and philosophers.


2. Letter: Letters are also literary sources examples that are relevant to history discovery. They are first hand written records of events and communication between people. Letters written in the earlier years are evidence of the practices of the past as some are fully condensed with knowledge.

Letters also provide a person angle in history. Thus, are relevant in providing information about the events that have evolved in the past.

3. Books and Investigative Reports in Impression: Books and Investigative reports are documents that contain details of the findings of an investigation as soon as an incident occurs. Investigate report can also be referred to investigate journalism, as they are more focused on a topic of interest or controversial issues in the public.


Such literary sources examples are also evidence of the past.

Non Literary Sources Of History 

Technically, the history of both the ancient and the modern are accounted for through literary works. However, there are also some non literary sources that are discovered, and can provide enlightenment about the events of the past, their effects and what we can learn from them.

The following are non literary sources of history:

1. Monuments and other archaeological remains
2. Numismatics
3. Inscriptions 
4. Foreign travellers' account
