I didn't know the raw dates in my soul are found rotten under your sole.
Could it be said that short poems often carry the most heavy messages? Well, Bamidele Nurudeen's poem, "I Didn't Know" gives a benefit of such doubt. If I were to describe the poem, I'd say, it was like the sand used the rub the scale of the blind man's eyes in the bible— It's a short Bible of self realization.
The lines in each stanza till the third, give a clue to self rejection. However, the last stanza ends with " I didn't know... I will still be, having my light to glow." giving the readers a message to ruminate on.
Indeed, this is a powerful piece!
I DIDN'T KNOW
I didn't know
the raw dates in my soul
are found rotten
under your sole.
I didn't know
the booming blossom
in the garden of my heart
is fading away
like the harmattan cloud.
I didn't know
the perfect breathing
in my chest
is ebbing bit by bit
like the summer sprout.
I didn't know
if I cease not to grow
I will still be
having my light to glow.
